History

Easter Monday joined the British statutory bank holiday calendar in 1871, courtesy of Sir John Lubbock’s act. The Monday was selected over Easter Sunday because Sunday was already a common day of rest under existing custom — adding the Monday extended the religious weekend into a long break.

Traditions

Egg-rolling competitions, pace-egging plays in the north of England, and family days out are the staple traditions. Easter Monday is one of the year’s biggest days for outdoor attractions, zoos and stately homes. Football fixtures resume on Easter Monday with a full Premier League and EFL programme.

Observance

Bank, government office and stock exchange closures match Good Friday. Retail is typically open on standard or extended Sunday-style hours. Public transport runs to a Sunday timetable in most regions. In Scotland, public services run normally — Easter Monday is just a Monday.

Frequently asked questions

Is Easter Monday a bank holiday in Scotland? +
No. Easter Monday is not an official Scottish bank holiday. Many private-sector Scottish employers honour it informally, but Scottish schools and public services typically do not close on Easter Monday.
